Hey guys, I just read a thread on bladeforums that had a bloke testing out his new tinder.

I cant link the thread because you need to be a member to view, but if anyone is a member its in the Busse forum under manufacturers and its got firestick or something in the title.

Anyway this bloke makes small portable tinder by getting cotton wool, and soaking it in petroleum jelly, and then stuffing it in a straw, cutting it in half then sealing the ends.

To use it he splits the straw with his 600USD knife (lol), spreads out the cotton wool, and then scrapes a firestick over it and with the first spark the stuff ignites well and stays lit for about two minutes with good flame.

Now after all this, I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get some petroleum jelly in WA, maybe a major hardware store or something?

Anyway I hope this helps someone and hopefully I'll get some help to help me.

Cheers guys

I put some on some paracord and didn't get anything, but I think I used too much.

I'll construct some tinder and post pics when I get my lazy ass round to it.

Cheers guys

petroleum jelly is vaseline.

the vaso in cotton wool balls as a fire starter is an old trick.

cant teach a young dog old tricks or something or other.

I think its a great idea, straw doesn't take up any space at all and it looks to burn bloody well. I'll have a few set in my kit

why waist your time. buy some hexi tablets they work a treat and last long enough to boil a billy.

because that involves buying them??

its not a do it all bit of kit, its just something to start a fire.

I've got straw and vas and cotton wool around the house

Steel wool apparently works as well.

steelwool and a 9 volt battery works great. Just rub the terminals on the stellwool and you have fire. or use a flint you can get one from a $5 survial kit from big W or Kmart. they are better then buying hexi tablets and cheaper.

Waldganger... the guy you quoted's method is way to long. Just get a couple of polystyrene boxes and a small amount of petrol. Add the polystyrene to the petrol until you get a nice thick resin. It will burn for a few minutes as well as the other blokes method, with the added bonus of being able to mold it to your needs.

polystyrene and petrol will make napalm. google it if you wish. also polystyrene is toxic when it burns
