Hi Lads,
A mate and I went out bush for the week end just gone we went an hour or two out of town and then by 4x4 about 10klms into virgin scrub then we loaded the Grizzly with food, water, camping and hunting gear for two men by 2 days and rode through more virgin scrub for over an hour (about 12 klms).
We made camp just off a flood plain just on dark. We went out at sunrise and I got my mate onto a nice boar (with his Bow) I then blew a stalk on a good boar, and then walked for a few hours looking for more pigs.
After lunch back at camp we loaded the Grizz with the same two men, day packs and hunting gear. We travelled around 12klms through grass up to 6 feet high. The ground was really rough in places particularly where the feral pigs had rooted up the soil, but the Grizz handled it in fine form. My mate then shot his first Buff with his new 375H&H (that was really awesome maybe 110 to 115 points). I got the Grizz bogged in a small crossing (bottomless soft sticky mud) and winched her out no worries we had seen a big croc (10 to 12 ft?) only 100 mtrs from this spot.
The next day we just cruised the flood plains checking for prospective hunting areas before riding to an unknown waterhole to check it out for Barramundi and Saratoga, They were there but we were stung by paper wasps and had to retreat back to the 4x4 and into town (around 3 hours away as I am allergic to the little buggers)
The Grizz performed like an absolute champion. I was knocking over sand palms as round as my forearm and bigger cutting a path as needed. Some of the terrain was horrendous and the extra inch or so from the lift kit more than helped.
All in all it was a great week end even though I did not get a hog. I learnt a lot about the buff up here, sometimes they are pretty casual, and other times they WILL KILL YOU NO QUESTION. Just after Roger took his big bull I took a pic of three buff from 100 odd mtrs and when I turned to leave them they actually followed me for a couple of hundred mtrs (just curious I guess).
A couple of hours later we spotted a group of ten buff (a mix of cows, calves and a whopper of a bull) feeding towards the timber line and I decided I was going to hide up in the timber line and wait for the big bull to come to me. Well we watched from about 300 mtrs as the head bull spotted us and decided that he was going to come over and give us a touchup, man he was fired up he was shaking his head as he came straight at us. He came in another 100mtrs toward us before we decided that he was too cranky to play with and headed towards the tree line out of sight.
It was a great week end.
Cheers Noel
