View Full Version : Gloves and face masks
Looking at the photos on this site and one thing that I noticed was how much the face and hands show up, especially when in sunlight. I usually dont worry when goat and bunny hunting. But from now on I will be wearing them more. Just wondering how many of you guys utilise gloves and masks when hunting.

Have not used gloves much but when I zero in on a good trophy animal the face mask normally comes out.

I use them most of the time.
All the time.
The face reflects a lot of light, and i am pretty white!
The hands, too. They really show up on photos where they are not covered.

Funny you should mention this Howie. I was reading a Yankee hunting mag last night and I saw an add for hunting blinds. In the add two people are sitting in front of the blind with camo the same as the blind.
What struck me about this add was not how great the cammo on the blind or the people was but how their faces and hands stuck out like the proverbial dogs nuts.
After seeing this I am defiantly going to invest in a mask at least!
I always have my face covered but only wear cloves in winter. I get to hot wearing them if it isnt cold. i will rub a bit of dirt/charcoal on them though

first time i went out with my brand new $125 leafy 3D suit i managed to loose one of my gloves... now i don't bother, but i probally should... i just need to cover my hair as best as i can...
come on, try and guess why...?
Howie, I dont like the gloves or the facemask especially this time of year. I prefer the cammo paint.

I never wear anything. Had too many encounters that discounted the need for it. Have shot and gotten close to plenty of animals in short sleeve t shirt with no gloves or mask. I do usually wear long sleeves though in winter.
Depends on what i am hunting and the temperature. 99% of the time i will pull my headnet on for the final stalk, if i'm walking through good country or the temp is low enough to allow i will wear my headnet all the time. I put my gloves on in the cold, or when i am going slow in stalk mode, but not for fast walking to the good spots.
I think covering hands and face is a very important part of your camo.

Mitch, well thought of, I should of mentioned paint/charcoal/etc in the title.
I was walking down a sand track this morning wearing full length oz cam pants and shirt with a short brim oz cam hat on and had just stopped to clean some grass out my broadhead had picked up in it when a fox walked out right in front of me about 15m down the track i just froze and just tilted my face down so the brim of my hat covered my eyes he walked straight at me stopped looked at me and walked towards me again i was just standing there with my hand up in the air touching my broadhead not being able to move my hand down do draw on him, at 8m he just walked off into the bush must have smelt me didnt see him again. So i think your eyes are the biggest thing to try and hide from game.

I always wear both:)
I have found that a face veil is also good for keeping the flies out of your face at this time of year, and the gloves usually protect your hands from thistles and spikes when crawling in on game as well as being extra camo.

The face is a critical part of your body to conceal, that is often over looked. If you wear camo paint try to avoid the australian issue stuff, it clogs the pores sweats off and is hard to get off when you want it to. Goto a party store and buy clown paint it is much better, only problem is that it doesn't double as sunscreen but it is cheap and you use only a tiny amount each time. That's my 2c

I always wear Fingerless Gloves and an airmesh camo face shield.

Another great thing about headnets - especially in summer/spring it reduces the great aussie fly swipe/wave, that movement can really put game on the alert. Some good points raised there guys.......Howie

Sat off a dam back in November waiting for the pigs to come into water. The young fella was decked out in his camo/facemask no gloves. Our mate was just in shorts and short sleeve shirt. I was on the opposite side of the dam looking back at them. Keith with his camo blended in with the tree line behind him even though it was a considerable distance away and the only time he was real noticable was when he moved his hands.. Bj's legs, arms and face glowed like a torch in the evening light and every time he moved i could see him no worries. Made me realize how important and effective camo really is.

always wear a face mask and gloves, the gloves are good if ur crawling on the ground u dont prickle yourself on anything. and the face mask is great concealment and it keeps the flys away.
cheers

I wear gloves 95% of the time and a face veil after something is spotted and I start a final stalk.
After seeing your melon personally Howie, if I were you I'd wear the veil down the street as well!;)
Dale.
the more u got covered the better the odds,or you just go home wondering , if only......
I've got the ASAT mask/net thingy.
No gloves as yet. I've seen some good camo mesh gloves that should suit the hotter weather.
So on the topic of face masks/head netting.
Whats your opinions on whats the best and most comfortable ones on the market?
camo paint .hood if its that hot or faceal hair it all breaks up the picture in th bush.eg no dinner plates

Hmmm, Naked hunting. Interesting, do you need a special permit for that?

Not so much as naked, just no gloves or face mask to go with a t shirt and pants. I'm sure I wouldn't last long in the hills if I hunted naked. Would be a true test of survival though.
I sometimes use a face mask...nothing spells "PREDATOR" more that two eyes facing out at your quarry...as do all predatory animals..so wondering if any of us have thought about using sunnies..maybe the reflective or ones with a "camo" external finish. They would also serve as eye protection when creeping throught the bush !!

For sure. Giggle hat with mesh face mask. The mesh is thin and doesn't interfere with feeling the anchor along the jaw bone. IMO a face mask is essential for the average Caucasian. Hands, as people have already mentioned, can look like two white flags screaming, "Hey, critter- I'm over HERE!" I use very thin cotton gloves dyed green- easy to feel the release trigger and grip.

My spearfishing goggles have a mirror like finish on the out side so the fish cant see your eyes tracking them. Fish get just as freaked as anything else if you stare at them.

That crossed my mind too. Just wasn't sure how everyone would take it.:)
I think most on this site have a sense of humour.
If they don’t, I'm in big trouble!;)

No dramas on the naked front as I do have a sense of humor.
Dale, I dont have to come on this site to be insulted about my lack of good looks,
I can stay at home and get that off the wife.......
Johno, I took Will out goat hunting and he wore big black sunnies, he was sitting against a rock dressed in camo and blended in well, except the black sunnies - his face looked like an over grown blowfly.
the receiver glasses are not coming out again Howie! i love the aus cam with face net! talking of predator, i feel safer stalking game with one on, or probably more confident! :)

I used to use a mesh face cover, just a piece of mesh fabric from aussie disposals tied in a knot at te back of my head. I switched to face paint last year because of the difference I found in feel, anchor and hence impact point when wearing the face mesh. I don't like the feel of the face paint and the difficulty of getting it off, but I wouldn't risk ruining a hunt with a big shiny round white face. Are the bought face masks any good with regard to not interfering with the shot?
I always wear gloves when deer hunting- I just have some cheap black cotton gloves from the camping shop- I made a hole in the right one for my release aid neck, and cut the palm out of the left one so that my skin contacts the grip. I think your hans move around too much to not cover them up.
Get a good quality head/face net and just practice with it on, in a short time you will not notice it at all. Mine doesn't interfere with my shooting what so ever ...Good luck Pete......
Will, you got those receiver sunnies on again....
old avatar howie, lets just let bygones be bygones!! :)
Just a quick point as well, i have found it very helpful going with an experienced hunter for my first few hunts, things like picking out that my sunnies were reflecting to much, is your mobile switched off? simple things that the newbie (has) and might forget to do!
