View Full Version : So my bow arrived, with no attatchments...
As subject states. My bow has arrived, naked.
I was under the impression it would come as pictured. Obviously they use this picture to make the deal seem all that better. And then there's the pay for express post and wait 5 days for it. (not very impressed)
Anyway, Since it has nothing, I am looking for some bits to bolt on.
Namely: Quiver, sight, rest and beginner arrows to destroy. lol
I am unsure of the interconnectability (geez thats a long word) between manufacturers so please correct me on this.
As I am starting out, I don't want to spend lots, it just has to shoot relatively straight (for a newb) and enable the introduction to hunting.
The parts I am thinking of are all local to Brisbane so I can pickup instead of waiting another week for overpriced delivery.
Please suggest other parts if they would seem a better fit or more suited to me.
Cheers
Parts considering:

I assume that a quiver is pretty standard and will bolt onto any bow. I'll just see what they have in the shop tomorrow.
Post up your opinions, remembering I'm a beginner, and don't want to break the bank. lol

More info
Are you setting your bow up for hunting or target?
What type of bow? Did you end up getting that PSE.
Poundage?
Fingers or release aid?
Heya rock steady,
It will be used on targets to start with. Then 3d/field at home or at mums block (200 acres at Esk) It's a PSE Bruin SU 40-60lb's. I am unsure what it is set at now. I've wound the limb bolt all the way in and pulled it no problems. Unsure if cam adjustment is required for more poundage though.
I want to use a release aid, depending on cost of course. Some of them are pretty $$$..
Cheers

If your keen I would look at joining a club. There are so many small things that we can never cover over the net.
The rest is fine but is designed to be used with a release aid, IMO I would not use it if you are shooting fingers to start with.
The sights are your basic el cheapos that will do the job until you learn more about the sport and your needs.
If you buy a release get a good one, it should outlast your bow.
Also if you go release aid you will need some type of peep arrangement, a good shop with install a peep and set it up for you before you leave, I would not be telling them you bought your bow mail order if it was from overseas, they get upset and I understand why. Bows are not like guns you need to be set up with the correct bow for body size.
If you are lucky the shop you go to may have an indoor range so they may give you a few more tips.
But unless you have someone to show you the ropes get into a club to learn the basics, and from a safety point of view be careful shooting in your back yard, I know of one neighbor that was killed in Australia a few years ago by a stray arrow, they are a weapon and those arrow can travel a long way and field points can kill.
It is a great sport, stick with it.
Thanks Rock Steady.
So, no rest is needed if using fingers ? Or a different kind of rest ?
I have signed up for the beginners course with Grange Archery club. Starts on Feb 2nd. I am also going down to the club tomorrow, to meet up with Brian and have a chat. Wont' be shooting, but will be able to pick a few brains.
I purchased the bow from Archery Supplies (archeryshop.com.au) A sponsor for this site.
As for shooting in the back yard, its pretty thick, and a great big wall/hill about 5 meters high leading up to the back yard of neighbour. I'd have to seriously miss to endanger anyone. As well as our yard slopes downhill too. I'd feel pretty safe shooting in the yard with the surrounds we have. (it's an old dried up creek bed)

If I miss by that far, I'll give the game up. lol

I was under the opinion that you couldn't / shouldn't shoot any arrows "off the shelf" with a compound bow, that an arrow rest is always required.
Recurves, and longbows are probably another matter though.

Yes you do need a rest for fingers, just a different type then the one shown.
The people at the club or shop should be able to show you a few different types.

That makes sense. I guess the slightest jiggle or even the slower release of the hand (when compared to a realse aid) would drop the rest away, and bugger an otherwise fine shot.

Here are a couple rests that will suit you as a finger shooter.
All 3 are relativley inexpensive but you can upgrade them as you go.

Take your bow tomorrow even if you dont shoot it.
You may meet some people with used stuff that may suit you...

Drifty, where you purchase your bow from?
Why is it naked? Did you question this?
Cheers
XT Freak,
Thanks for the links.. But I think I'll shop elsewhere. lol
Yes, that's where I bought the bow from.
http://www.archeryshop.ashop.com.au/p/96788/pse-nova-rf-single-cam-camo.html
That's the setup I bought. Thinking that what's in the picture is included. Call me a sucker, go on, I am. lol
Either way, a lesson learnt. I've emailed them to give feedback. I'm not requesting a refund on the postal difference as they shipped a better bow than I ordered. (PSE Bruin SU) Must have been out of stock.
I did mention to them about the use of the fully kitted up bow picture, and how it is misleading to the un-informed.
Either way you look at it, I purchased a product based on a picture. Nowhere on the page does it state you get a sight, quiver, arrows or rest. My fault for that, I just hope they fix the picture so nobody else gets sucked in by that.
Just spotted these on Ebay...
Thoughts ?

Hi Drifty,
There are a few shops you can visit Brissie wise.
Abbey Archery as you have already located,
Eagle Archery in South Brisbane
Darryl Reeks is in Ipswich
Zen Archery in North Brisbane
All of these will be able to supply something to suit your end user needs.
If you get lost and end up in the Gold Coast then pop in a visit us :P

As I only own a motorbike, If I could find a way to carry the damn thing, I would come down to you. Would prefer to deal with someone who is actively on this site.
Maybe I could mount it across the handlebars like Crocodile Dundee.. HAHA I have a fairly large back, could possible stick it in and have it poking out. Will give it a test and see.
Thanks for the list though. Didn't know about Zen. Lookin them up now. As I live nthside, closer would be nice. lol

Any of the shops in Brissie will have the items I posted a link to. The only reason I got them off the site I did is cause it was the first one that came to mind.
No reason for you to shop where you dont want to:D

Cheers, I'm heading out this morning to see if I can't fit it out.
:)
I took the bow out to Darryl Reeks.
Ended up swaping it as, even after testing myself, I am actually a left hander. I rang Archery Supplies and they were ok to ship it back and swap it over. With my previous experience with them, I chose to deal direct with someone. The wrong hand selection was my fault, and no reflection on their service. (other than getting what you pay for, or asking for something, and getting something different (postal))
So now I have a Perfect Line 45-65lb 26-31" bow. Currently shooting it bare with fingerpad to learn first, then sight/aid comes in a couple of months.
All up, I spent a little more than I originally wanted, but I'm happy with the bow I now have. It's much easier to pull than the PSE Bruin. Especially noticable as I'm drawing with my weak arm.
Traded the Bruin + $220 which included: 6 carbon easton arrows, rest, finger guard, dual bow soft carry bag and a pack of bludgeons. Not to mention the 5 hours I spent at the shop getting lessons, tips and advice.
Money well spent I reckon. Darryl Reeks Archery, I can't say enough about them. Darryl, Matt and Josh, excellent knowledge and friendly service.
Poor Matt was the main guy who helped me. Feel sorry for him, but he stuck it out.
Thanks guys
:)
Edit: Here's a pic of the outfit. Total cost: $590
