Its up to you mate. I'm sure your old and wise enough to make this decision without our telling you what to do.

Who cares what others think anyway, just do what you need to do.

Its just hard living in an enviroment where its not welcomed. I had a heated arguement tonight with my girlfriend's mother and we kinda sorted it out but im afraid one day it might come between us and even my girlfriend. Just a few comments eg killing my dog pushed my buttons. I been hunting all my life and when i moved to aussie i didnt realise its such a hush hush subject. everyone for there own but its not worth fighting about.

Has anyone else been in the same situation?

Don’t stop hunting you will regret it. I cop it from my aunty she calls me a murder but I don’t let it get to me.

If they don't accept you, for who you really are mate... are they worth it?

True mates, and family will, the rest aren't worth knowing.

Best of luck.

It must be hard surrounded by vegans.

I would mention that the bacon and eggs they had for breakfast came from animals, that the grilled fish they had for lunch also came from animals and that tasty leg of lamb roasting in the oven also came from an animal.

Then I would invite them over for dinner and serve up soming you have harvested.

I also agree with what Luke has said about this.

I have served up deer to my wife and kids several times recently and they no longer have a problem with eating deer.

I'm starting to get that too............... and i ain't even got a bow yet!

People assume that just because you want to hunt, that you're gonna turn into some kind of rabid freak, that wants to shoot anything and everything that moves....

.........idiots.

people like that really annoy me, very hypocritical. just remind them the stress, and how domestic animals they are eating are treated (not saying they are mistreated). atleast what we hunt have a good free life before hand.

To me its not about taking the life of the animal. Its about the stalk and the challange and the placement of the shot. Thats what i get satisfied by and thats why i enjoy doing it.

With the bow its about being concealed and close and basically invisible, I get ppl saying "I couldnt kill an animal" but its not what i think about, And like everyone i have respect for the quarry and try to put them down quick. Its always to to crack a goat and have them collapse dead in the tracks 10 yards away.

My mother was socked when I told her I was going deer hunting. Se said that I would regret it. I just told her that they are feral and are in the same league as cane toads and carp and that a cockroach as more right to be here than they do. Se didn't believe me so I told her that I only shoot the ugly ones. She had no comeback to that.

Put simply, they get over it. If they don't, just don't talk about it to/with them.

Bloke- do you enjoy hunting? For your own reasons? Then that's enough. Problem is lack of empathy between hunters and non hunters. I get the feeling that you can empathise with (e.g.) your girlfriend's mother, i.e. you can understand and respect her perspective, but disagree. If another refuses to attempt to understand, within their own field of conceptulisation, your view of the matter, then who owns the problem? THEY do, of course. So, if they have a problem with hunting, you should suggest they don't go hunting. All the more tasty critters for you.

Thats right i dont have the problem here, my girlfirend is fine with me going hunting, i even took her duck shooting last year over in NZ and showed her the way i hunt and how much respect i show for the animals im going after. Turned out she was a lucky charm :D. But shes not a hunter and never will be and thats cool. Im going to keep hush about it around home as its not worth fighting about.

Why is it over here us hunters get a hard time?

Why is it over here us hunters get a hard time?

Because our country has a predominantly urban population who have lost touch with the real world. The closest many of the people in our country get to the "country" values they like to identify with is a R.M. Williams store.

People who dont (cant) hunt will never get it.
I don’t think I even get it, I could not explain why I enjoy hunting so much.
I recon there must be a hunting gene or something that stems from our Neolithic hunting ancestors, some people just don’t have it in them.
Just think, all the things you love about hunting can be had without the kill. But the kill is an undeniable part of a hunt.

Absolutely...then smear yourself with the blood and dance naked under a full moon.....or is that just me :P:P...

Listen bud...if you constantly worry about what others think of you you'll never get to sleep at night...you are not on this planet to live up to the expectations of all and sundry...be true to Yourself, Your morals and Your ethics...and if others have a problem...its their problem..not yours !!

some good points raised here,
in my opinion these people are not worth engaging in conversation, in my limited experience with them (a close friend) it is just best to state why you partake.

Besides, the longer you spend talking to these people and wasting air, the more you could be out bush hunting. Be polite but don't ever think of dropping something (or some one) that you love because of misguided pressure from ignorant individuals!

Do a search on this site as this was discussed previously. Some great come backs and one liners were posted. If they dont like hunting, simply dont discuss it around them.
I woundn't care what people say, water off a ducks back.
And if it comes to the crunch, help pack their bags...............Howie

Lol i've tried those lines but still bugs are dumb, cows and sheep and pigs are diffrent as they are farmed for meat.

We came to an agreement here that hunting will not be talked about as its a touchy subject, i said fair enough (thinking go hugg a tree! :P But no i cant insult the non hunters thoe ). Still crazy to me that it even got to be like that but life goes on.

I know for sure i wont be sharing any meat i harvest, except with the dogs ;)

Some of my relatives, (who dont like hunting) still ask how I go and all I say is that I had a great time thankyou, or got some meat - very polite but I dont go any further. Everyone has their own opinions on hunting, if they dont like it, as I mentioned - dont discuss it. SIMPLE.......Howie

when people say thing like that i ask them, do you eat meat, they say yes of course, i say "so you pay someone else to kill it for you, all im doing is cutting out the middle man" most of the time they say nothing, but you have to respect there thoughts and if there not fond of it then dont bring it uo when there around.

youll have aheap more people that are like that mate, then again there are people who are very interested, it just depends.

dont give up!!

please, you will regret it.

Hunting is not even gong to be a subject around here no more. I will respect there values as long as the respect mine so there should never be a disagreement again. Now both sides can carry on doing what they both enjoy. :D

Give up hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mullac, what I want you to do is run to the nearest bathroom and wash ya mouth out with soap!! ; ) Jokes aside, I think what's lacking is education of the wider public concerning the facts on hunting and hunters. Always seems to be a knee jerk reaction when ever the subject of hunters or hunting is bought up in conversation. The fact is, a good bow hunter, or rifle hunter for that matter, will bring the game down with one well placed shot. The animal most of the time is taken unaware and is not stressed in any way, unlike normal domestic animals used for human consumption. My personal feeling is that bow hunting is one of the most humane ways to bag some dinner. Usually the animal bleeds out in a matter of a 100yards with a well placed shot, even less at times.
I have both worked on the land and owned a gun store, so I have met many station owners and hunters. I have seen how some animals get treated in transport.............I am not saying its always the transporters fault, but as an animal I think you would be hard pressed not to get stressed out in that position. I have also seen animals suffocated (not uncommon) in transport and arrive at the sale yards with broken legs and so on. I have been out with many hunters and although you get a few cowboys (very few) on the whole they are sensible and respectful to the animal they are hunting.
What do the population think we are doing out there, shooting arrows in an animal to see how much damage we can do........the mind boggles.
Anyway mate I will get off my soap box, but I say bring some fresh humanly processed meat home to the table and tell the doubters to go to a sales yard one day and watch the trucks pull in.

I love nothing more than to be sitting around a fire cooking a meal of the food that was shot (or lately and more often broad-headed) by me looking up at the stars and planning the next days hunt.
